Under the Village Court Act 2006 (amended 2024) a union parishad may settle small criminal and civil disputes itself. No lawyer is needed, the fee is nominal, and the decision is taken by majority of a five-member panel.
Affray and simple hurt, theft, cheating, criminal trespass, defamation, damage to crops by cattle, and outraging the modesty of a woman — under the specified sections of the Penal Code.
Recovery of movable property or its value, recovery of money due under a contract or receipt, restoration of possession of immovable property, and wages or compensation due to an agricultural labourer.
Since the 2024 amendment a village court may try claims valued up to BDT 3,00,000 (three lakh).
A five-member panel is formed for each case — the union parishad chairman as panel chairman, two nominees of the applicant and two of the respondent. One of each side's two must be a member of the union parishad. The decision is taken by majority.
